Zakk Genni: The Voice Behind the Vulnerability
Zakk Genni wasn’t always Zakk Genni.
Zachary Mullaly now wildly known as “Zakk Genni” was born into a world of instability, growing up in a broken home with his single mother and a brother living with a traumatic brain injury. From an early age, Zac was no stranger to adversity—navigating the emotional turbulence of his environment while battling his own internal struggles.
Diagnosed in childhood with OCD, ODD, ADD, and ADHD, Zac faced a complex web of mental health challenges. As he grew older, his struggles deepened to include major depression, crippling anxiety, and mild substance abuse. Through it all, he grappled with a growing sense of disconnection from himself and a powerful desire to escape the version of his life he no longer recognized.
In the midst of a soul-searching cross-country trip, Zac made a decision that would redefine his path: he would start over. A fresh name. A clean slate. A new identity that could carry his truth, without the baggage of his past.
And so, Zakk Genni was born — not just as a persona, but as a reflection of his evolution.
With a natural draw to music and a heart full of unspoken thoughts, Zakk decided to channel his struggles into sound. Singing didn’t come easy, but when he stumbled across the raw emotional landscapes of artists like Lil Peep, XXXTentacion, and Juice WRLD, he saw a door open. Through rap — specifically the haunting, emotional style of emo rap — Zakk found a way to turn pain into poetry.
In mid-2021, he dropped his debut EP, Grippy Socks, a raw and vulnerable introduction to his world. The project quickly carved out a space for him in the underground scene, resonating with listeners who recognized their own wounds in his words. The title, a dark nod to psychiatric hospitalization, set the tone for the kind of transparency Zakk would come to be known for.
Zakk’s authenticity didn’t just attract fans — it drew in fellow artists. Not long after the release of Grippy Socks, he teamed up with rising artist Seon to create “Sunny Dayz,” a melancholic yet hopeful track that marked a high point in his early collaborations.
Today, Zakk Genni continues to grow, not just as an artist but as a storyteller. With a unique blend of raw lyricism, melodic grit, and an unwavering dedication to emotional honesty, he offers more than just music — he offers understanding.
Open-hearted, unfiltered, and deeply human, Zakk Genni is not afraid to speak on the things most try to bury. And in doing so, he’s become a voice for the broken, the healing, and the hopeful.
